One Room Challenge - Week 6 & Beyond

Final Reveal!!

What a great challenge the One Room Challenge hosted by Better Homes & Gardens every Spring and Fall for the past 18 years really is!! Sponsored this time by Sherwin Williams and the High Point Furniture Market, this challenge showcases an exceptional display of rooms created this season virtually, by Featured Designers along with Guest Participants showcasing some of their finest work! It has been an inspiring opportunity to join along and showcase my designed creations as well!

Last night, I got a good night sleep in my new lux, earthy chic bedroom! If you need to see the before photos, or read up on the makings of this transformation you can do it in the previous entries:

Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4 | Week 5

But for now, let me share with you my sense of accomplishment for pulling this Owner's Suite Refresh together in a little over 6 weeks...

Practicality

I really wanted my bedroom to function as just more than waking up from sleep and jetting to the bathroom to prepare for the day. I wanted it to serve as an inviting space to spend time with my husband in an intimate private setting intended just for us - especially now that our home has undergone some adjustments since my daughter's return from college. I also very much wanted a seating area for that occasional night cap as well and I always pictured enjoying one by the flickering of flames.

I am so excited with the way our new Touchstone electric fireplace turned out. I'm still pinching myself for actually turning this into a reality in less than 6 weeks, from conception to completion. My husband Michael undertook the arduous craft of Venetian Plastering; His install, along with Patrick from Atomic Electric in Raleigh, did a great job. With the ease of electric, there is no carbon emitted and there is a heater that gently blows out warm air when the need arises.

Love the way our new MOD swivel chairs are just the right size for unwinding from the day.  Upholstered in a teal colored velvet, they definitely set the stage for my grounding earthy color palette. They feel so luxurious to sit in while sinking toes in the cozy shag rug. Yes, Shag is something that I just can't give up and find myself returning to again, and again (ode to my 70's retro flair). The cool abstract design creates a perfect vignette for the little sitting area in the room.

Also adding visual interest to the my high vaulted ceiling is the weaved wall hanging that I originally purchased at the beginning of the challenge and ultimately became the jumping off point for this interior. The colors really spoke to me, reminding me of the layering of mountain, water and sky.

The beautiful dresser was a must-have for this challenge and quite frankly, the motivation for starting this ORC. While always grateful for our previous vintage hand-me-down, it was in disrepair and not ever really efficient storage for two. I fell in love with my new dresser when I laid eyes on her! The curvy silhouette in it's weathered oak finish adds a warmth to the room and compliments the existing armoire - a family heirloom - without being too overpowering. With generous room on the top, I even got to accent it with a new lamp with some built-in mood lighting.

Another spot in need of updating were the pair of nightstands that flanked our bed. The new nightstands with their washed grey painted finish don't compete with the other finishes in the room, staying pretty neutral and providing ample storage for what haves and a few of our favorite books and magazines. Sorry, no USB plug-ins available here ;)

Sensuality

And now for the bed... So this is what an organic night's sleep really looks and feels like! It's a holistic experience indeed. Organic linens, alternative down feathers, green memory foam and sustainable fabrics envelope us into a soothing nights slumber. Upon waking even my husband thought he had a spent a nights stay in a luxury hotel suite!! That was a great compliment to me. It is a special treat to be able to sample all these fine threads. My only wish is that others can follow in my footsteps. I am grateful upon waking each morning and thankful to the heavens above for a dreamy nights sleep.

Creativity

No room is complete without a surrounding of creature comforts that the eyes can feast upon and thus nurture the soul. As I look around the room I am reminded of the gifts this earth has given us and I selected decor which is soothing to the soul. Most are pieces from my personal collections and my eShop. Some are from local potters and some from favorite vendors, crafters and artists.

Spirituality

I have always incorporated some of the ancient modalities into my designs and each space beckons its purposeful use. An important one for me in this particular room has been incorporating some spirituality from my Native Ancestors. It is a great time to explore the ancient Medicine Wheel in this time of unrest and to maybe look for answers or cures for the ills that plague us today. Used mainly by Native Americans as a guide for health and healing, it encompasses the the four cardinal directions and embodies Father Sky, Mother Earth, and Spirit Tree to represent health and the cycle of life. Used as an instinctive guide I have been able to incorporate some of the attributes associated with it and reflect upon how it best represents me.

Until next time-

Congratulations, on a terrific ORC, Deborah! How delightful that you now have a bedroom you can so thoroughly enjoy - the fireplace and those yummy teal chairs are such icing on the cake!
Congratulations, Deborah! I loved reading this post and finding out all the special ways you incorporated all that was important to you in your newly redone bedroom. I'm so glad you now have a room that is intimate and that speaks to you and your husband.

He did a great job on that fireplace. I love the idea of an electric fireplace, and being able to get toasty when you want to.

I've been surfing online more than 3 hours as of late, but I never discovered any attention-grabbing article like yours.

It's lovely worth enough for me. In my view, if all site owners and bloggers made good content material as you did, the net will
likely be much more useful than ever before.
